Beats & Beyond #20 — Phil Weeks by Jedsa Soundorom For its twentieth episode, Beats & Beyond turns to Phil Weeks, the Parisian DJ, producer and founder of Robsoul Recordings. His sound brings together Chicago house, funk and disco, with rolling basslines and a raw approach to sampling. Much of that character comes from how he builds his music: digging for samples, cutting them into loops and working with the Akai MPC3000. A small vocal fragment or a dusty chord becomes the centre of a track, carried by drums that leave room for swing. Through Robsoul, Weeks has made that approach part of a wider house music community, connecting the sounds of Paris, Chicago and New York.
